The second version of the International Cajon Festival held in Lima in April this year, was a total success. Artists from Puerto Rico, United States, Brazil, Chile, and Mexico joined this almost weeklong feast of rhythm, to exchange and simply hang out with eachother.
In a completely relaxed and almost familial environment, the many Peruvian and foreign artists attended eachothers presentations and clinics. People literally flooded the Spanish cultural center in Lima, and all the diverse artistic forms at this event, gave it a truly multicultural character. The Afro-Peruvian Cajon hosted one of greatest exponents of the Mexican Marimba, Javier Nandayapa, one of the Afro-Carribean icons of percussion, Efrain Toro, one of Jazzs legendary Peruvian drummers and percussionists, Alex Acuña, two great upcoming Jazz artists, bass player and composer Edward Perez, and Queens-based guitarrist and composer Eric Kurimski, one of todays leading Peruvian guitarplayers, Ernesto Hermoza, and of course most of the leading Peruvian Cajoneros, such as Juan "Cotito" Medrano, Leonardo "Gigio" Parodi, Freddy "Huevito" Lobaton and Marco Oliveros. |
